My grandmother, Mrs. Lakshmi Vaidyanathan, had a deep and natural love for art, craft, and design. She had an eye for beauty — especially when it came to colours and patterns — and the sarees she wore always reflected her impeccable taste. What started as a personal passion slowly grew into something more. From a small bedroom in her home, she began sharing her love for Kanchipuram silk sarees with others. She didn’t advertise or seek attention — people simply heard about her through word-of-mouth. And before long, women from near and far came to her, not just for sarees, but for the warmth, care, and timeless style that only she could offer.
To Her First Store...
As her passion blossomed into something much bigger, my grandmother took a bold step forward and opened her first store, Taruni Loka, in T. Nagar, Chennai, in 1996. It was more than just a shop — it was the heart of her dreams, filled with colour, creativity, and the quiet strength she carried within her.
She poured her soul into every part of the work. She treated her weavers like family, guiding them with gentle encouragement and fresh ideas, helping them bring her vision to life. You could often find her sitting at the loom for hours — lost in thought, dreaming up new designs, playing with colours, textures, and the tiniest details that made each saree special.
Over time, she expanded her work beyond traditional Kanchipuram silks to create beautiful poly-cotton and silk-cotton sarees — each one a reflection of her evolving artistry.
To Taruni Laya...
With her growing success and an unshakable passion for her craft, my grandmother opened her second store — Taruni Laya — in Chennai. The inauguration in 1998 was a proud and unforgettable day. Some of the most respected names in the textile world — from renowned showroom owners to master weavers — came to show their support. Their presence was not just an endorsement, but a heartfelt recognition of the quiet force she had become in the industry.
Driven by an endless curiosity and a deep love for design, she continued to seek out beauty in every thread. Her journey introduced her to gifted weavers who truly understood her vision. Together, they transformed her ideas into stunning designer wear — sarees that told stories, carried emotion, and reflected the woman behind them. Over time, she became a name whispered with admiration in elite circles — known not just for her impeccable taste, but for the grace and quiet strength behind every saree she created.
